On Construction of the Otherized Image of China in The Age of Rice and Salt
This paper takes contemporary American science fiction writer Kim Stanley Robinson's alternative history novel The Age of Rice and Salt as an object to explore the image of China constructed by the West in the post-Cold War period. It analyzes the western conceptual stereotype of China's intellectual sphere, way of thinking, and discourse as reflected in the novel, which is essentially a portrayal of China under the vision of"Orientalism".In response to the phenomenon of misinterpretation of Chinese culture,we should take a rational and critical mindset on the China-related works under the influence of the western values, and establish a model of equal exchange with cultural diversity and mutual learning between civilizations.
