Review of the Reasons for the Prosperity of the Wei Family in Baixiang During the Ming and Qing Dynasties
The Wei family in Baixiang,Hebei began in the late Yuan and early Ming Dynasty, and made its fortune in the imperial examination during the Jiajing period of the Ming Dynasty, then continued developing until the end of the Qing Dynasty and the Republic of China. It has been lasted for over ten generations and has been consistently prosperous for more than three hundred years. The reason is that the Wei family members maintain their family lineage through home education, promotion through the imperial examination, marriage with aristocratic families, socializing with famous scholars, and institutionalizing family organizations, making their family a local aristocratic one. However, the Feng,Zhang, and Lyu families from the same hometown have declined in the Qing Dynasty due to the population, home education, and their complex family character and so on.The prosperity of the Wei family is a microcosm of the prosperity of families in traditional Chinese society. It has typical representativeness.
