As the most representative local publication during the May Fourth period,Xiangjiang Review broke the dull atmosphere of public opinion in Hunan as soon as it came out,and established a public opinion space soaked in the spirit of the May Fourth Movement and with a new outlook,reflec-ting the keen grasp and active response of Hunan intellectuals represented by Mao Zedong to the main-stream of the times.By focusing on the characteristics of Xiangjiang Review as a newspaper,we can find that the construction of public opinion space is mainly manifested in the following three aspects:unfolding topics with a modern consciousness in the context of global revolution set the tone for the public opinion space;the author group,primarily composed of intellectual youth but open to all read-ers,enhanced the openness and inclusiveness of the public opinion space;concise and clear layout de-sign,rich and diverse forms of discourse,and lively language style shaped the unique demeanor of the public opinion space.This construction of public opinion space not only created a flourishing scene of speech eruption but also promoted the development of the revolutionary movement in contemporary Hu-nan.
