Why Screenshots Are Believed To Be True:An Examination of Communication Semiotics
The widespread circulation of screenshots in interpersonal and public communication depends on the actor's belief that the screenshot is"true",that is,the"authenticity"of the screenshot.In view of the fact that the essence of screenshots is"symbolic text"and its"authenticity"is an explanatory result,this paper starts from the perspective of communication semiotics and regards the"authenticity"of screenshots as the product of the interaction between"text","context"and"interpreter".First,the media technology and symbolic framework visible in the text dimension make the screenshot"perceived as true"by the way of material metaphor and visual metonymy;Secondly,the co-text and situational context that can be perceived in the context dimension are"derived as true"through intertextual referential and semantic framing;Finally,the individual growth experience and community cultural identity that can be invoked by the interpreter dimension are"recognized as true"through experience conjugation and emotional guidance.
