How the Visually Impaired"Watch":The Construction and Mechanism of the Soundscape about Free-Barrier Movies
In the era of visual culture,a film practice dedicated to meeting the spiritual and cultural needs of the audiovisual disabled——free-barrier movies——has emerged. This study takes the experience of appreciating free-barrier movies as an example to examine the"viewing"issue of the visually impaired, analyze the construction and mechanism of the soundscape of them, understand the logic of visual cognition of them, and clarify whether free-barrier movies can achieve barrier-free communication of content and meaning. The study finds that the visually impaired form visual concepts through free-barrier movies, and they can construct unique soundscapes and visual images in their minds through familiar conceptual descriptions and rich details in free-barrier movies. There is a three-level"reading"pattern in the cognition and understanding of the movies for the visually impaired. It is their different expectations of movies that make them at different reading levels. The process of visually impaired people constructing their visual mental picture can be understood from the emotional, linguistic, sensory and spatial dimensions. With the development of media technology,we need to continuously examine the issue of viewing and constantly reflect on how to achieve true barrier-free communication.
