The Legitimization of the Journalism Profession:Revisiting the Concept of News Authority
The concept of"news authority"provides a significant cultural perspective for discussing the"fate"of the news industry in the digital era and has become an important concept in the research of digital journalism in recent years. However, this concept remains vague, and this paper aims to make efforts to further clarify it based on the groundwork laid by previous scholars.Viewing news authority as a cultural authority within the context of a profession, this paper argues that understanding the core of news authority lies in comprehending how journalism as a profession is established and legitimized.Placed within the framework of occupational sociology, the paper explores three distinct schools in the field of occupational sociology:the structural/cultural school, the control/ecological school, and the interactive constructivism perspective. This article provides an analytical framework for analyzing the situation, changes, and challenges of news authority in the digital era.Based on this framework,it initiates an exploratory discussion, aiming to stimulate further empirical research.
