From the Social Construction to Mediated Construction:Rethinking the Materialist Phenomenology
With the popularity of mediatization theory, how to understand deep mediatization has become a hot topic.Coudlry and Hepp argue that"how reality is constructed through media"is the core issue in understanding deep mediatization, and put forward materialist phenomenology as a theoretical idea to explore this issue.Due to the fact that it involves many theories and lacks clear interpretation, materialist phenomenology is rare in the local academic community.By analysing the ideological lineage of materialist phenomenology, the article finds that materialist phenomenology focuses on how the media intervene in the construction of reality, thus reconstructing the theory of social construction. With the media being regarded as an important category for explaining the construction of reality, materialist phenomenology introduces cultural materialism, the theory of configuration, and agential realism. However, after analyzing the above theories on the basis of the"human-object"relationship,the article finds that although these theories help materialist phenomenology to explain how the medium constructs reality at the material level, the interconnections between the theories have not yet been fully explained. With the increase in the number of intellectual resources involved,it is urgent for materialist phenomenology to fully explain the relevant intellectual resources based on the"person-object"relationship,or else the theory will lose its theoretical tension as it continues to expand.
