As Indicator and Promoter:Re-Examining"Affordance"in Digital Journalism
In recent years,affordance has become an important conceptual tool for understanding and analyzing digital news ecology.From the perspective of conceptual history studies,this article provides a retrospective review of the application of the concept of affordance in digital journalism.This article first analyzes the dual connotations of affordance as attribute/ontology and relation/epistemology and distinguishes two roles of affordance in digital journalism studies:(1)as an indicator,the subject of affordance reflects the development of digital technology in recent years;(2)as a promoter,affordance is utilized as a multi-dimension research tool,from theoretical,perspective to variable dimensions,in digital news studies,and as a variable,leading to different research approaches and methods to some extent.Future affordance research in digital journalism can strengthen its theoretical construction by developing dialogue with classical communication theories.
