The Differences in User Information Verification on Social Media Platforms:A Perspective of Media Richness
The proliferation of misinformation on social media has become a major challenge in the media industry, making fact-checking increasingly difficult. This study, based on the theory of media richness, explores the differences in information verification behavior among users on two types of social media platforms. The study verified the research hypotheses through a nationwide online survey(N=2000).The results show that exposure to text-and-image-based social media can directly affect information verification behavior, while video-based platforms indirectly influence users'information verification behavior by enhancing the credibility of information. This suggests that the lower media richness of text-and-image-based social media may prompt users to be more proactive in information verification. In contrast,video-based platforms, due to their high media richness, can enhance the credibility of information, making users more inclined to believe that the information is credible and further verify it.The findings of this study provide important practical insights for improving fact-checking,information verification, and the governance of misinformation.
