Application Oriented:the Walkthrough Method as Digital Technography and its Path in China
Modern people are increasingly frequenting the digital world through applications and mini programs. The walkthrough method is a new research approach for applications, which advocates that researchers gradually observe and record the interface, functions, and action flow of applications through personal practice,in order to collect research data. The research process is a self-tracking interaction between researchers and applications. In tracing the evolution of the walkthrough method, this article proposes that from the perspective of the research care, walkthrough method is essentially a form of digital technography. On this basis, this article reveals the theoretical background of technical phenomenology implied by walkthrough method.Through CiteSpace clustering analysis,it was found that there are currently key research topics such as using walkthrough methods to reveal the technical affordance and cultural production of applications, exploring the operational modes and ecological characteristics of applications, and elucidating the deep passwords of applications as technological-cultural constructs. This is enlightening for examining application practices in the context of Chinese society. Finally, considering China as the largest consumer country of applications, two key issues regarding the application prospects of the walkthrough method in China are proposed.
