Order of Reading:the Emergence of News Paper in Reading World of Modern China(1839-1898)
Inspired by the"Order of Books",this article shifts its focus from text to reading, exploring the competition and adjustment of Chinese print media in the 19th century. The study reveals that in traditional China, books and DIBAO constituted a stable reading order, which was later challenged after the intervention of newsprint.Firstly, newspapers replaced DIBAO as the primary source of news in the reading world, particularly after reporting the war in 1884.Secondly,newspapers gained intellectual legitimacy by reflecting on the defeat in the Sino-Japanese War.The"internal reorganization"of Chinese print media in the 19th century resulted from intellectual transformations and social changes. The alterations in the reading order allowed scholars to perceive a new world and establish new relationships.
