From"Homo sapiens"to"Digital Beings":Conceptual Evolution and Representational Forms of Digital Life
In recent years, the rapid advancements in AI technology and the metaverse have sparked extensive discussions surrounding the concept of"digital life"across various contexts, giving rise to a multitude of related yet ambiguous concepts. While the focus remains on technological progress, there is an urgent need to elucidate the theoretical foundations and problem domains associated with digital life. From the standpoint of technological practice, digital life primarily encompasses three categories:artificial intelligence programs, virtual digital humans, and digital immortality.Although these categories are formally interconnected, they evoke distinct"life imaginations."Artificial intelligence life forms envisage autonomous consciousness within AI entities, while cyborgs inhabit physical bodies in the metaverse, retaining conscious existence.Conversely, consciousness immortality pertains to the reconstitution of consciousness post-memory upload.Importantly, investigations into digital death and digital biopolitics offer social and humanistic reflections on the phenomenon of alienation within digital life. These critical inquiries shed light on the societal implications and ethical considerations surrounding the emergence and evolution of digital life forms.
