From"New Things"to"New World":Key Technological Metaphors in the Chinese Internet and Their Evolution(1994-2024)
The development of the internet in China has given rise to a range of technological metaphors that bridge the gap between technology and its practical applications. This study employs the framework of key conceptual metaphors to investigate the evolution of these metaphors within the Chinese internet and how they reflect the public's cognitive history of the technology.Four major metaphorical phases are identified:"roads"and"bridges"around 1994,"cloud"and"stream"post-2005,"platforms"after 2010,and"artificial intelligence"and"metaverse"emerging in the 2010s and 2020s.These metaphors highlight evolving perceptions and imaginations of internet technology, mirroring the progression of technological innovation and adoption. The processes of terminologization and monopolization mark significant points in the lifecycle of these metaphors.Analyzing the historical development of these metaphors provides valuable insights into both the history of internet technology in China and the public's understanding of it.
