The Influence of Incidental News Exposure on Public Political Participation:The Mediating Role of Factual and Perceived Political Knowledge
Incidental news exposure has emerged as an alternative method for accessing news, but its impact on public political participation remains unclear, particularly in the context of China where empirical research is scarce. This paper uses survey data from 1,600 Chinese netizens to explore the relationship between incidental news exposure on social media and political participation, drawing on political psychology theory. The study finds that incidental news exposure on social media positively predicts both online and offline political participation. Moreover, factual political knowledge negatively mediates the relationship between incidental news exposure and offline political participation, while perceived political knowledge positively mediates this relationship for both online and offline political participation.
