The Formation of Writing Concepts of Shen Bao in Its Early Stage
This paper examines the development of early Shen Bao newspaper writing concepts through the debates between Shen Bao and The North-China Daily News from 1872 to 1877,focusing on the aspects of commercial stance,Sino-Western interactions, journalistic truth, and public discourse. In terms of commercial stance,Shen Bao emphasized the overall interests of the city, with its expressions constrained only when commerce intersected with politics. In regard to Sino-Western interactions,Shen Bao maintained a balance between tradition and modernity, adopting a cautious and conservative attitude.Shen Bao actively advocated for journalistic truth, applying it in internal competition within the press industry and eventually incorporating it into the principle of"record all news".Regarding public discourse,Shen Bao provided conceptual support for the opening of the public sphere in Shanghai. The construction of writing concepts in modern Chinese newspapers highlights the importance of the theoretical analytical line of internal competition and interaction within the newspaper industry. These aspects reflect the basic issues of writing stance, purpose, and method in the reporting practice of early Chinese newspapers and become a significant source for the later formation of a clear idea of journalism among the Chinese people.
