Identity Compensation:The Digital Engagement and Short-video Practices of Visually Impaired Uploaders
Benefiting from the barrier-free development of short video practice, visually impaired Uploaders who use short videos to show themselves are emerging frequently in the visually impaired group, and output videos related to blindness to sighted people. This interesting phenomenon provides a unique perspective for this study.Based on the actor network theory, the special community of uploaders with visually impairment was the focus of this study. After observing theirshort-video practices based on their identity of"#the Blind",this study explored the compensatory role of identity in digital interactions and media-controlled existence among the special community. This study discovered that"#the Blind"identity was the result of long-term behavior of visually impaired community and individual visually impaired uploaders, and more importantly, the identity was a dominant factors for visually impaired uploaders to practice short videos. The influence of identity stems from the collective recognition of others.Visually impaired uploaders spoke up for the visually impaired community and justified themselves through Q&A interactions, short documentaries and scenarios interpretation. In doing so,they aim to build a visually impaired friendly society by coordinating the digital communication between the healthy and disabled groups.Through this process, researchers managed to understand the compensatory role of information gap-bridge,co-benefit network manifestation and heterogeneous position coordination.Furthermore, this provided a new way for society to re-examine people in vulnerable situations and seek social support research to transform"disadvantages"into"advantages".
