Feed-forward Time:On the Timeliness of Digital Media
Previous discussions on media time have primarily followed two paths:the technological construction of time experience and its differentiation, with a focus on how technological potential shapes human perception. However,in this essay, digital media is not viewed merely as an"extension"of human organs and perception but rather as a"substitute,"as proposed by Stiegler.Drawing on Hansen's concept of"feed-forward,"this paper conceptualizes digital time as a form of"feed-forward time"and explores the fundamental differences between digital time and traditional media time concepts."Feed-forward"serves not only as a precise term for describing new experiences of time but also as a central tenet of"21st-century media theory."
