Abstract
The Nirvana Sutra in Cave 2 of the East Thousand Buddha Cave deeply reflects the unique understanding of life and death in the Xixia period. After analyzing the images of Nirvana in the cave,it is found that in the process of creation, the master of the cave deliberately chose the flame pattern and several animal images such as peacocks and monkeys to reflect the idea of Nirvana under the influence of Tantric Buddhism. The image of"Qingxinshi"is integrated into the spatial layout of the Nirvana sutra and echoes the idea of salvation in the cave, further demonstrating the concept of life and death of the Xixia believers in the Pure Land during this period. The Nirvana Sutra in Cave 2 of the East Thousand Buddha Cave not only can provide us precious artistic heritage, but also can be an important image reflecting the social culture,reli-gious beliefs and aesthetic concepts of Xixia.
