The Snow Leopard that Sees All Sentient Beings:Multiple Image Narratives and Ecological Cultural Reflection
From 2009 to the present,snow leopards,as a plateau species with both mystery and sacredness,have continued to be tracked,recorded,and represented as a wildlife"star"by different subjects,such as scientists,environmentalists,local herders,Buddhist monks,and Chinese and foreign film and image producers.Over the course of the past fifteen years,scientific investigation images captured by infrared cameras,"dominant"community videos and pictures created by local people,documentaries produced by mainstream media,and theatrical documentaries or feature films composed by filmmakers have all aggregated into an epic of snow leopard themed collection.Among the works,the film Snow Leopard,directed by Tibetan director Pema Tseden,is a representative work in this series of video collections.The film has both practical significance and rich artistic metaphors.This article takes the Snow Leopard as the starting point for the history of visual narratives,aiming to trace why the snow leopard has become a creature with a special status in the ecosystem and Tibetan belief systems and how the species has become a symbol with multiple meanings in contemporary Chinese visual and ecological culture.
