Tang Zhen,a thinker of the late Ming and early Qing Dynasties, and his Korean contemporary,Yu Hyeong-won,share a number of similarities in their ideas of political reforms.Though they were in different countries,to reshape the governmental organizations was a common choice for both of them. Both Tang and Yu emphasized the"real power"of each sector and institution;in order to operate the organizations more efficiently, they proposed the approach of"official's layoff";as for the officials'selection and appointment, both of them re-garded the"actual merit"as the core criterion.Such similarities between them are related to the similar social en-vironment which they encountered and the Confucian people-oriented ideology in which they believed;the similar social realities are the external causes, and the Confucian people-oriented ideology the internal.A comparative a-nalysis of their ideas of political reforms can provide inspirations for the academic circle to study Tang Zhen's and Yu Hyeong-won's thoughts.
