The"Great Feudalism"implemented in the early years of the Western Zhou Dynasty established the foundation for"the whole country"of ancient China. Each vassal state had its own ethnic groups which united and integrated to fulfill their obligations to defend the Zhou Dynasty. When the State Yan's power expanded to Liaoxi, ethnic groups such as the Guzhu were subordinate to the Marquis of State Yan.However,State Yan gradually declined with the decadence of Western Zhou Dynasty and finally retreated to the area where Beijing is now located.By the Spring and Autumn Period, the power of State Yan in Liaoxi had become quite weak.Duke Huan of Qi's"Northern Expedition"provided State Yan a chance to regain its ruling in Liaoxi.During the reign of Prince Zhao,State Yan drove away Donghu group,re-controlled Liaoxi and made its governance enter a new stage.State Yan's control and re-control over Liaoxi reflects both the governance of Huaxia group and the co-existence and integration of various ethnic groups in this region.
