In the fourth year of Emperor Xining(1071),Goryeo restarted paying the tribute to the Song Dynasty after a break of more than forty years.Mingzhou was chosen as the landing port this time instead of the traditional port of Dengzhou.It seemed that Goryeo tried to"avoid the Khitan"by choosing Mingzhou as the only channel for offcial exchanges between the two parties,but in fact,there were conflicts between the development of private trade in Goryeo and the weakened role of the Northen port of Dengzhou.Goryeo intended to expand the economic and cultural exchanges with the Song Dynasty so as to enhance its strength and play a more important role in the Northeast Asian order centering on the Song and the Liao.
