Digital Divide's Impacts on Residents'Consumption Structure:Based on Micro Evidence of CFPS from the Feasible Capability Perspective
In the process of digitalization,it is of great significance to maintain the continuous upgrading of residents'consumption structure to stabilize economic growth and move towards common prosperity.Based on the data of China Family Panel Studies(CFPS)in 2014,2016 and 2018,this paper examines the impact and the mechanism of digital divide on residents'consumption structure from the perspective of residents'capability approach. The results show that the digital divide does inhibit the upgrading of resi-dents'consumption structure, and further widens the consumption structure gap between different groups, especially between urban and rural residents.Further research shows that the digital divide weakens the political participation of residents, reduces the market competitiveness of residents'econom-ic conditions, and restricts the social opportunities of residents, resulting in the lack of feasible ability of residents,so that the driving force of upgrading their consumption structure is insufficient.Heterogeneity analysis finds that for residents in eastern areas in China, households with a higher proportion of women and low consumption level, the digital divide has a more significant impact on consumption structure, and the"use gap"of the digital divide is more influential than the"access gap"in the upgrading of con-sumption structure. In addition,it is found that the development consumption and service consumption of residents are more inhibited by the digital divide. The conclusion of this study has important policy impli-cations for restoring consumption, expanding domestic demand and stabilizing economic growth in China.
