The First World War had a profound impact on Europe and even on China, and Yan Fu,the"first man of Western learning",underwent a great change in his thinking and his contemporary commen-taries.On one hand,he was in close contact with Lin Baishui,a villager from Houguan, and the news-paper Public Words, behind which the political backstage of Anfu was involved;on the other hand,he had actual political interests with the political faction centred on Yuan Shikai from the Xinhai Revolution to Yuan Shikai's assumption of the presidency of the Republic of China, from Yuan Shikai's restoration of the imperial system to the defection of the Progressive Party led by Liang Qichao, from the arrival of Li-ang Qichao's disciple Cai E in Yunnan to Tang Jiyao's declaration of independence. In this series of polit-ical turmoil,Yan Fu's reflection on the modern press and Chinese and international public opinion not only has a contemporary touch, perseverance and vision in the change of the world pattern, but also re-flects the dislocation and repetition of his political and ideological identities, which are worth pondering on the experience of his gains and losses.
