The Populism Trend of Referendums and Its Hidden Worries
Under the infiltration of populism,referendums have become the preferred tool of legitimacy in po-litical games,and parties hope to dominate the direction of referendums in order to boast"public will",and then"build momentum"for themselves.The populism trend of referendum,a negative tendency of referen-dum,refers to the disregard of objective criteria,based on the antagonistic thinking of"people"and"elites",and the deliberate elevation,glorification and use of the form of participation in referendum rallies.At the level of theoretical cognition,it is manifested in the blind admiration for referendum.At the level of institu-tional practice,it is manifested in the instrumentalization of referendum.The lack of theoretical construction of referendum does not help to curb the spread of populism.The infiltration of populism into referendum,in turn,triggers confusion in the theory of referendum and hinders the process of institutionalization of the referendum theory.Only by perfecting the theoretical construction and system construction of the referendum can the popu-list elements in referendums be dissolved,and the rationality of referendums be restored.
