In order to reduce the harm of smoking, the effects of air permeability of cigarette paper, tipping paper and plug wrapper on the burning temperature of cigarette and deliveries of tar and seven harmful components (including CO, HCN, NNK,NH3, B[a]P, phenol, and crotonaldehyde) in mainstream cigarette smoke (MCS) were investigated, and the effects of total ventilation rate of cigarette on the deliveries of the harmful components mentioned above in MCS and hazard index of cigarette were also studied. The results showed that:1) With the increase of air permeability of cigarette paper and tipping paper, the burning temperature of cigarette rose, while the deliveries of tar and the harmful components (except NNK) and cigarette hazard index decreased. 2) With the change of air permeability of plug wrapper, cigarette burning temperature and the deliveries of harmful components in MCS did not change regularly. 3) With the increase of total ventilation rate of cigarette, the deliveries of tar and most harmful components in MCS and cigarette hazard index decreased to different extents. It was concluded that properly raising the air permeability of cigarette paper and tipping paper and the total ventilation rate of cigarette could control cigarette burning temperature, the deliveries of harmful components in MCS and the hazard index of cigarette to a certain extent.
