Inheritance and Rebellion:a Dialogue between"Interpretation of the Civil Covenant"and"Social Contract"
The Interpretation of the Civil Covenant is the Kanji translation of the Social Contract by Chomin Na-kae,which played an important role in the dissemination of Rousseau's democratic thought in China and Japan.By comparison,it can be found that the translation exhibits"creative rebellion"against the original text,but the differences are essentially dual:on the one hand,Confucian concepts are used in the translation of"Contract Theory";At the same time,the Contract Theory was also used to transform the Confucian doctrine,allowing Eastern and Western concepts to simultaneously intervene in the construction of Japanese democratic thought in di-alogue.The dissemination of"Translation"also influenced the acceptance of contract theory and the formation of democratic concepts in modern China.To explore how these differences are formed,the translation background and dissemination of the Interpretation of the Civil Covenant are first introduced.Then,typical concepts and ideo-logical structures that differ between the Interpretation and the Contract Theory are compared,and their founda-tions are explored in the different constructions of cultural beliefs in the East and the West,thus elucidating the conversational nature between the two texts and their enlightening implications for current East West communica-tion.
