How Generative Artificial Intelligence Can Be Integrated into Qualitative Research——Functional Evaluation and Ethical Reflection Starting with"Generated Fieldwork"
With the advancement of generative artificial intelligence(AI),researchers have developed a"generative field"that digitally simulates physical, social, and interpersonal environments.Case studies reveal that AI-generated interviewees require com-prehensive character profiles in open-ended,in-depth interviews. The interview responses generated by AI exhibit characteristics such as"correspondence bias,""commonsense response bias,"and"relational ambiguity,"indicating AI's strong capability for infor-mation provision but limited ability to foster meaningful relational dynamics. In basic coding tasks such as reading, excerpting, and categorizing,AI demonstrates significant efficiency advantages, though it tends to exhibit"summary bias"and"analytic bias."During more interpretive stages of coding, including narration, explanation, and analysis,AI often relies on academic norms to critique the in-ternal perspectives of cultural knowledge holders, leading to misinterpretations of indigenous concepts and a failure to identify para-doxes in commonsense reasoning. However, when provided with such paradoxes,AI can generate comprehensive, systematic, and nov-el theoretical analyses.Given AI's varied capabilities at different stages of qualitative research, scholars must carefully consider whether to delegate certain research responsibilities to AI,addressing ethical questions of what should be permitted. It is recommend-ed that academics begin by allowing AI to support simulations, enabling researchers to conduct"real"and"virtual"parallel studies, utilizing virtual interviews for skill development and contextual adaptation, while also leveraging virtual analyses to inspire fresh ideas.
