In recent years, the ecological environment in the Dongting lake basin has faced enormous pressure, mainly due to natural disasters and unreasonable human development and utilization.Accurately obtaining the spatiotemporal evolution trend of the watershed is crucial for protecting and constructing the ecological environment of the Dongting lake basin. This article is based on remote sensing data from 2017 to 2021,using the NDWI water index threshold method(standardized differential water index)to analyze the trend of changes in the lake basin area of Dongting lake during this period, and study the migration trend of the basin center of gravity, exploring key issues and vulnerable links in the basin. The results indicate that the water area of Datong lake did not change significantly from 2017 to late March 2021 and remained stable. The water area of Tongjiang lake has undergone significant changes, especially in 2019 when it experienced a cliff like shrinkage compared to 2018,with a decrease of 214.98 km2 from 863 km2 in 2018 to 648.02 km2 in 2019.Among the meteorological factors that affect the evolution of lakes, rainfall has the highest correlation with temperature. The results of this study can provide important reference for the formulation and scientific planning of governance measures for sustainable development in the Dongting lake basin.
