In order to precisely control the main exhaust air volume in the sintering process and reduce power consumption of the main exhaust fans, variable frequency drive(VFD)retrofit was carried out for four main exhaust fans in the sintering system of an iron and steel plant. The operating mode of the fans was converted from the original variable frequency soft start and switching to line frequency to full VFD operation.Through optimization of the VFD scheme, reconstruction of the power supply, excitation, and control systems, and proper arrangement of installation and commissioning during the production line maintenance outage, the equipment upgrade was smoothly completed under the prerequisite of ensuring normal sintering production. The original system was retained as emergency backup. After the retrofit, precise control of the main exhaust air volume in the sintering process was achieved. The power saving rate of the fans under VFD operation was significantly improved.Meanwhile, the sinter quality was effectively enhanced and the sintering energy consumption reached an industry-leading level.
