The Positive Effect of Fear of Failure on Growth of Entrepreneurial Enterprises—Perspectives of Cognitive Appraisal Theory
Fear of failure accompanies entrepreneurs,but the existing research still knows little about the positive effect of fear of failure on entrepreneurial behavior and entrepreneurial results.Based on the cognitive appraisal theory,it understood the concept connotation of fear of failure from the uniqueness of entrepreneurial situation and the continuity of entrepreneurial process.It explored the positive effect of fear of failure on growth of entrepreneurial enterprises,analyzed the mediative role of entrepreneurial efforts in the relationship,and explored the boundary conditions of the influence of fear of failure on entrepreneurial efforts.It conducted an empirical analysis on the survey data of 316 entrepreneurs,and the results are as following.Fear of failure contributes to the growth of entrepreneurial enterprises by enhancing entrepreneurial efforts.The higher the entrepreneurial calling and the lower the environmental dynamism,the more fear of failure enhances entrepreneurial efforts.It reveals the positive effect of fear of failure on entrepreneurial results from the perspective of entrepreneurial behavior,deepens the understanding of the motivating effect of fear of failure,and enriches the contextualized research on the formation of entrepreneurial efforts from the micro perspective.
