Impact and Heterogeneity of Urban Digitalization on the Evolution of Innovation Space from the Perspective of Ecological Niches
Digitalization is an important support for new quality productivity, and empowers urban development with its ecological attributes, which in turn shapes the innovation space.Based on the three-dimensional ecological niche theory,it constructed an analytical framework to analyze the impact of urban digitalization on evolution of innovation space, and used the panel data of 284 cities from 2011 to 2021 to conduct empirical tests. The results show that urban digitalization stimulates the urban innovation vitality, and enhances the innovation absorption capacity of developing cities by improving digital ecosystem, which narrowes the innovation gap between developing cities and developed cities, and makes the evolution of innovation space in China show conditional β-convergence characteristics. The impact of urban digitalization on the evolution of innovation space dependes on the digital ecological niche. The improvement of digital ecological niche width and height enhances the innovation absorptive capacity. The moderate overlap of digital ecological niches promotes the sharing of innovation resources and value co-creation between cities, and this effect is moderated by the cognitive proximity between cities. In the process of digital empowerment, different cities are divided into five types, and there are different digital development strategies for different types of cities. The findings provide new ideas for stimulating new momentum of digital development and promoting urban collaborative innovation.
