Abstract
Although Charlotte Brontë's Jane Eyre was once labelled as"rebellious feminism",the adult Jane's series of choices indicate that Jane's rebellion was not complete. From the aspect of patronage, combined with the novel's historical and cultural background, this essay aims to analyze Jane's anti-paternalism narrative discourse, the process of how Jane accepts patronage and realizes a class promotion, and Jane's family and colonial ethical choice after being a benefactress. This essay points out that Jane Eyre has her rebellious side as well as her conservative and practical side, and that Jane is a pragmatist who benefits much from patriarchy and colonial violence, rather than a"rebellious feminist".On the one hand,Jane Eyre represents Victorian women's struggle in patronage. On the other hand,it exposes how they submit to patriarchy and colonial violence in order to benefit from patronage.
