Abstract
W.H.Auden's first libretto,Paul Bunyan, which centers on the stories of a giant logger in American folklore, was criticized for its simplistic-and,therefore,distorted-treatment of American history.Through a careful investigation of how myth and history are presented in the work,it is evident that Paul Bunyan not only reflects poetically the struggle between mankind and nature in early American history, but alludes to American history of the 1930s and 1940s.What connects these two separate phases of American history is the American Dream.Utilizing popular dramatic and musical forms,Paul Bunyan tells the story of how people should deal with their dreams, which reflects Auden's mature view of history,to its target audience.
