In the 1860s,Matthew Arnold proposed that the canon of English literature could provide citizens with the strength of moral enhancement,a proposal which has been attacked by different critics.Terry Eagleton,among others,contends that Arnold treated English literature as a weapon against the working class.Moreover,scholars from the third world announce that English literature played a role of controlling the colonial subjects in the former colonies.However,in the post-imperial era,especially after Abolition and Brexit,English literature is losing its territorial basis,gestating a group of literary works to address directly the so-call England problem and Englishness involved.
