In the landscape of the western narrative of modernity with"I","think"and"being"as the fundamental elements,Virginia Woolf explores the way of"looking within"in the field of fiction."Looking within",however,is not her complete exploring route to the modernization of fiction.Actually,in her early and late novels,three narrative norms can be recognized as the narrative of collective self,the narrative of bodily vision,and the narrative of actual experience,in each of which"looking outside"as narrative motivation is implied.Respectively generated on Woolf's social,historical and practical intentions in counterpoint to those of"I","think"and"being",the three norms can be counted on for her sake of controlling and guarding against the potential risk of thorough subjectivization that"looking within"may bring about.
