Abstract
To remove the obstacles for the deep reading of Chaucer's English, this article explores Chaucer's English varieties and language features, with examples taken from the"General Prologue"of The Canterbury Tales.Chaucer's English varieties include mainly the varieties influenced by French and Latin, and the varieties owing to dialect differences. In the voice of literary London dialect, with the inheritance of French and Latin verse tradition,Chaucer's English depicts a world of English language that is comparable to French and Latin. The language features of Chaucer's English are specifically demonstrated in the rhyming scheme, grammatical form, and writing style of Chaucer's verses, and are particularly differentiated from Modern English in terms of pronunciation, grammar, syntax, and style.
