A language community transcends the mere utilization of lingua franca and encompasses multiple elements such as history, culture, and national identity. In Samuel Beckett's novel Watt,it seems that Sam and Watt constitute a miniature English language community.Actually,it represents the political entity established by the British government to rule Ireland through a series of language policies.Under the discourse hegemony of Sam(the One),Watt(the Other)is depicted as an"Irish madman".It is clear that Watt,in a disadvantaged cultural position, cannot truly integrate into it and communicate with Sam equally. However,Watt does not succumb to the discursive hegemony of Sam,and the language barrier is also his way to reverse discourse and deconstruct the language community. In this sense,"equality"at the level of language will only inevitably lead to the deconstruction of language community. The identity of members and their sense of belonging should be the crux of a language community.
