Hugh Henry Brackenridge had been a key witness to the Whiskey Rebellion,a local resistance movement that was the first major test of federal power.His work,Modern Chivalry,a polyphonic novel in the form of satirical dialogue,satirizes the self-righteousness of the elite aristocrats as well as the fanaticism and pretentiousness of the mass democrats,thus alleviating the contradiction between the arrogant aristocrats who advocated the republican system and the radical populace who paraded democracy,and thereby defusing the risks of national politics.From the perspective of an intermediator,Brackenridge initiated the pro-dialogue democratic deliberation hypothesis so as to work on the deviation,contradiction and divergence between the conventional local practice of direct democracy and the representative political system of the federal government.
