African American writer Ernest Gaines is famous for his insight into American racial problems and his excellent writing techniques.In The Gathering of Old Men,Gaines ingeniously applies both the classic Gothic narrative and space narrative to illustrate the synchronic psychic space,mourning space and grotesque space.In each space,the narrative tension caused by the fight between racist horror and anti-racist horror discloses the characteristics and root of horror space,presents the significance of the resistance to horror and reflects the writer's concern for African Americans.
