Rhetorical theory of fictionality was advanced by Richard Walsh and has been furthered by Walsh,H.S.Nielsen,James Phelan and some other scholars. It has captured full attention of several international journals. However,it has not received due attention in domestic academia, where it is partially introduced and mainly applied to the analysis of the issue of fictionality in several genres of(non)fiction. This paper examines Walsh's views on fictionality and the views both jointly and respectively put forward by him,Nielsen and Phelan. It reveals that these theoreticians disagree to varying extent in such aspects as the criteria for fictionality, the nature of rhetorical approach and the relation between fictionality and truth.Yet their theories have been effectively applied in various genres including historical novel, autofiction, autobiographical fiction, historiography, campaign and narrative medicine, which in turn has inspired new approaches to fictionality. Moreover, their research scope has been continuously extended.
