In 2014,Derek Walcott published his final play O Starry Starry Night.Though this play is not the pinnacle of Walcott's dramatic works,it is undoubtedly the one in which he was most deeply immersed.In his advanced years,Walcott felt that his creative powers were waning and that his time was running short.He became particularly reflective on van Gogh's most creatively abundant years in Arles,hoping to find an inexhaustible source of artistic inspiration from them.The journey of van Gogh and Gauguin in the play,from understanding and estrangement to reconciliation,mirrors Walcott's own hope,in his final days,to achieve reconciliation with himself,with others,and with the world through love and forgiveness.This work is a creation born from the awareness of impending death.Van Gogh's most brilliant The Starry Night is a rhapsody of death,symbolizing Walcott's grand farewell to the world.
