Ancient southeastern Yunnan covered the present Honghe Hani and Yi Autonomous Prefecture,Wenshan Zhuang and Miao Autonomous Prefecture and some neighboring areas. The evolution of southeastern Yunnan features four characteristics as follows.First,it was far from the two regional centers of ancient Yunnan:Dianchi and Erhai basins, and at the same time, there was no strong regional political power formed in this area, making it quite absent from the political arena.Secondly,it was located on the Jiaozhi Road connecting central Yunnan of China and Vietnam, and the development of this area was closely related to the rise and fall of the transportation along the Jiaozhi Road.Thirdly, because southeastern Yunnan was adjacent to Vietnam, the changes in the relationship between Vietnam and the Chinese dynasties over the years exerted much impact on the evolution of southeastern Yunnan.Fourthly, southeastern Yunnan experienced slow changes at first and then quickened its steps.Since the Yuan dynasty, southeastern Yunnan had gone through fairly quick development, especially in the Qing dynasty.
