Academic Research Approaches and Practice in the Historical Study of the Republic of China:A Review of Transcending the Class Differences:Organization and Survival of the Working Class in Shanghai between 1945 and 1949
The development and breakthroughs of the historical study of the Republic of China need continuous innovations in such key issues as the selection of the research objects,the collection and application of historical materials,and the multi-dimensional synthe-sis of research dimensions.He Jiangfeng's Transcending the Class Differences shows some unique insights in the selection of the research time,space and populations.This academic work takes the empirical research of the reconstruction of the historical facts as the re-search approach,devotes great efforts to the collection and identification of historical materials as well as their proper and comprehen-sive application.At the same time,it takes into account the academic context of the research objects,refuses to confine itself to the in-herent paradigm of the existing research,and tries to construct a reasonable elaboration or analysis approach based on its own under-standing so as to get out of the shackles of the existing research paradigms with the research perspective focusing on the multi-dimen-sional analysis and expansion.This academic work presents a new attempt at the academic approach to the historical study of the Re-public of China.However,this new attempt also reveals such weaknesses as the over-refinement of historical materials,an insuffi-cient analysis of the historical timeliness,an inadequate combination with the macro trends,and a weak horizontal and vertical compar-ative analysis.
