Effects of Imbibition with Maltose Solution on Seed Germination and Seedling Growth of Maize
In order to investigate the effects of imbibition with maltose solution on seed germination and seedling growth of maize, the seeds were soaked with 0.1,0.5,1.0,5.0 mmol/L,and 10.0 mmol/L maltose solution, and the indexes of seed germination and seedling growth were measured. The results showed that the optimum concentration of maltose was between 0.1 mmol/L and 0.5 mmol/L.In brief,0.5 mmol/L inhibited the germination rate, peak value, mean daily germination and germination value.Moreover,0.1 mmol/L and 1.0 mmol/L could shorten the germination time, increase coefficient of velocity of germination, and promote the bud length and root length. At the same time, compared with the seeds soaked with the same concentration of glucose, soaking with a low concentration malt-ose had no inhibition, but improved seed vitality and promoted seedling growth, indicating that maltose could replace glucose to a certain extent.
