Nation-stateBuilding:International Experience and China's Pathway
This article discusses the construction of contemporary nation-state.The first two sections discuss some basic theoretical concepts of nation-states and nation-state construction.The author holds that although there is no"real and pure"nation-state in the world,as long as the majority of the people identify themselves as a nation and are loyal to the country to which they belong,and at the same time the government can effectively manage the country,the country is a normal,stable nation-state.An important point of view put forward in this paper is that the construction of a nation-state is a long-term process with no end,with the goal and direction of homogenization and nationalization,in which the state developsto achieve political stability,economic prosperity,social harmony and cultural identity.The article also points out that"nation-state construction"can be divided into two phases:"foundation"and"growth".As long as a country is established,"foundation"is basically completed,whereas"growth"is a continuous dynamic process,the goal of which is to try to keep the country closer to the ideal"nation state".From the angle of nation-state construction,this paper analyzes and introduces the experiences and lessons of some countries in the world in the process of nation-state construction,including Turkey,America,India,former Soviet Union,former Yugoslavia,Arab countries and South American countries,discussing the relationship between cross-border ethnic groups,US immigration and nation-state formation.The last two sections are about the construction of the Chinese nation-state,including the time and mode of the formation of the Chinese nation-state,the characteristics of the Chinese nation-state,the development history of the Chinese nation,the achievements and challenges of nation-state building in the past century and the significance of entrenching the Chinese sense of Volksgemeinschaft today.The article points out that it is a hard and long-term task to build a high-level nation-state.
