In the academic discussion on the shift towards regionalism in border area governance, some studies have interpreted the regionalism of border area governance from an international regional perspective, and emphasized the expansion of international regional space ofborder area governance. However, these studies fall short in explaining the formation and evolution mechanism of regionalism in border area governance at the international regional level. The introduction of regionalism theory from the discipline of international relations to analyze border area governance enriches our understanding and advances theoretical and practical research on regionalism in border area governance from an international regional perspective.By adopting a regionalization theory framework, the formation and evolution mechanism of regionalism in border area governance at the international regional level includes four stages:origination, functionality, socialization, and impact, and is based on the resolution of border issues, distinct yet interconnected with national-level regionalism.Taking China's southwest border area as a case study, this analysis demonstratesa coordinated evolution between border area governance and international regional governance, illuminating paths towards a community with a shared future between China and neighboring countries.
