A natural case of clostridial enteritis in a red kangaroo(Macropus rufus)caused by Clostridium perfringens type A was diagnosed by clinical symptoms, necropsy, histopathology, toxin testing and bacterial isolation and identifica-tion.An adult red kangaroo was suddenly depressed and anorexic, and died 20 hours later, with opisthotonos and the expanded abdominal circumference in zoo.Necropsy and histologic examination revealed lesion in gastrointestinal tract, liver, and kidney that were suggestive of clostridial enteritis. Results of the mouse toxin test in revealed acute lethal toxin in the hemorrhagic intestinal contents.A single,bacillus-producing,bulky gram-positive bacillus was isolated from the mu-cosal surface of the hemorrhagic intestine and identified as Clostridium perfringens type A by multiplex PCR of the toxin genotype of C.perfringens.This study can provide a basis for the diagnosis, prevention and control of C.perfringens enteri-tis in red kangaroos.
