Population and Distribution Status of Reintroduced Crested Ibis in Dongzhai Reserve,Henan Province
From September to November 2021,we surveyed the distribution area and potential distribution area of the rein-troduced crested ibis(Nipponia nippon)in Dongzhai National Nature Reserve in Henan Province,China.A total of 17 roost-ing sites were found during the wandering period, including 12 sites in Luoshan County, one in Shihe District, one in Zhuan-qiao Town,Guangshan County, and one in Dawu County,Hubei Province. There were 15 roosting sites used by crested ibis in November. We conducted an integrative survey on the population size of the wild crested ibis and recorded 268 indi-viduals in total, with 84.33%of the population distributed in Luoshan County. The largest roosting site consisted of 46 ibises, and ten roosting sites had clusters of over 15 ibises, which accounted for 80.22%of the total count. The results showed that Luoshan County was the primary distribution area for the reintroduced crested ibis. However, some of the population has migrated to the surrounding areas and some also has dispersed over longer distances.20.52%of the juve-nile ibises were born in the current year, and the survival rate of juveniles in the autumn and winter was 77.78%.It is impor-tant to strengthen the habitat management outside the reserve, especially in areas where the crested ibis has dispersed.Collaboration with local authorities is also necessary to develop optimised joint protection measures for the crested ibis, which is of great significance for studying the behavioural characteristics of the ibises and promoting the expansion and re-covery of the reintroduced population.
