First Molecular Identification of Taenia crassiceps in a Captive Lemur catta in China
A case of subcutaneous cysticercosis caused by Cysticercus longicollis in a five-year-old captive male ring-tailed lemur(Lemur catta)was first reported in China. The infected animal showed obvious gluteal cysts, but no other abnormal signs. The case was treated in the Second Teaching Animal Hospital of Sichuan Agricultural University.During the consultation, fine needle aspi-ration was used to perform morphological examination of the cyst contents. The results showed that the cyst contained a large number of cysticerci. The typical cysticerci were oval in shape, with a long and retractable neck and a single scolex,on which there were four suckers and 16 hooks(in a single row). The cysticerci were subsequently confirmed to be the lar-val form of Taenia crassiceps,i.e.,Cysticercus longicollis,by the amplification and sequencing of the nad1 and cox1 genes in cysticerci DNA.The results can provide a reference for epidemiological investigation and prevention and control of this parasite in China.
